Asian Games: Deepak Kumar bags first Silver for India in Shooting

Deepak Kumar won a silver medal for Indian in 10m air rifle shooting event.

Asian Games are the second largest event after the Olympic Games. It is a multi-sport event held every four years among the countries in Asia. The event was started in 1951 by Asian Games Federation. New Delhi was the venue at that time. There was a participation of only 11 countries in 1951. Now, it has been increased to about 45 countries in the 18th edition.

At present, the 18th edition of the games is going on in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and
Palembang. This famous sports event commenced on 18 th August and it will continue till 2nd September. For the first time, the two new sports namely eSports and Canoe polo are also being promoted in this event.

It is the moment of pride for India as the Indian Shooter (Deepak Kumar) bagged the first Silver Medal with a total points of 247.7 in 10m air rifle event at the Asian games. His prospects for the medal increased when he
produced a wonderful 10.9 in his 18th round. For India, this is the third medal in the current game and second one in the shooting. The gold medal was claimed by China’s Haoran Yang who scored 249.1 and Taipei’s Lu Shaochuan reached the third place.

The silver medal is the first major individual-based medal for Deepak Kumar who hails from Delhi. He had already won a world cup in the mixed team which was held in Guadalajara. His partner was Mehuli Ghosh. This is really a commendable feat for Deepak as he has entered into the Indian Team only last year.

On the behalf of India, Deepak Kumar and Ravi Kumar participated in this event. But Ravi Kumar was
eliminated after the 20th shot with the score of 205.2. Winning the medals in the Asian games would definitely serve as the booster for those competing in the forthcoming sports events.
