Train 18 Wiki
India’s first engineless train by name of “Vande Bharat Express” will prove to be a revolution in Indian Railways. The semi- high-speed train named Train 18 is entirely designed and built in India under the Make in India campaign in a time span of 18 months. Train-18 was rolled out on October 29, 2018, in Chennai. The train was tested for its brakes and crew orientation completed its trial run @160kmph has been given a regular clearance by the Electrical Inspector to the Government (EIG). The first in the fleet of “Vande Bharat Express” is a 16-coach train took time of 18 months to build at a cost of Rs 97 crore by the Modern Coach Factory, Rae Bareli. It is considered as a successor to the 30-year-old Shatabdi Express. It is built at a 40% less cost than a similar train imported from Europe. The unit cost is expected to come down with subsequent production of units.
After the 3-4 day trial period, the train is supposed to be handed over to Research Design and Standard Organisation (RDSO) for further checks and final speed test. Train 18 Project will mark as a milestone in the success of Make In India Campaign initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Train 18 Indian Railways
Talking about the Train 18 Design, its exterior appearance resembles a bullet train with an aerodynamic narrowing of each end of the train. It has 16 passenger cars that can accommodate a total of 1,128 passengers. The two compartments in the center are first class compartments with a seating of 52 people each. Rest of the compartments has a seating capacity of 78 people each. While the train is entirely built and designed in India, the train’s doors, seats, branking system, and transformers are the only elements imported in the first production, with a plan to domestically produce for the next unit. It has a driver coach at each end of the train allowing the faster turnaround at each end of the line.
It is fully air-conditioned. The interesting feature is that the Executive Class seats in the train can be rotated 360 degrees. The train will have diffused LED lighting, automatic doors with sliding retractable footsteps, and GPS based passenger information system, modular toilets which are disabled friendly, roller blinds and diffused LED lighting, and inter-connected fully-sealed gangways. It is also fitted with CCTV cameras for safety purpose of passengers. Moreover, it will also have Wi-Fi and infotainment facilities. The Train 18 images are no less than a dream come true towards India’s progress in Infrastructure and Transportation.
Train 18 Route
The inaugural set of Train 18 will run between New Delhi and Varanasi, the constituency of PM Modi. Train 18 will cover a distance of 755 kms in straight eight hours with planned stoppages at Kanpur and Prayagraj. Currently, the Shatabdi running between Delhi and Varanasi takes around eleven-and-half-hours to complete the journey. Train 18 will reduce the travel time on this route by about 15%. The semi-high speed train will run at a speed 160 kilometers per hour (99mph) which is 30kph more than the Shatabdi express. It is planned to be functional by February 2019, most likely to be inaugurated by @narendramodi after the presentation of the budget.
Train 18 India
Indian Railways is planning the production of another unit of Train 18 in the next year. Production of 4 more units will follow the subsequent year, that is, in 2020. We can assume that by 2021, we will have a total of six Train 18 running on different routes.
Indian Railways and ICF are also collectively planning the development of Train 20. It will be another semi-high speed train that will replace Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express fleet from 2020 onwards. As of January 2019, Train 18 has successfully completed trial runs up to a speed of 180 kmph targeting 200kkmph of maximum speed
Train 18 Fares
Indian Railways is all set to launch indigenously built Train 18 after completing the trial runs and getting the due clearances related to safety. It is expected that
#Train18 fares are likely to be 40-50% higher than Shatabdi Express. It is expected that fares of Executive Class will be between Rs 2,800 and Rs 2,900 and fares for Chair Car should be between Rs 1,600 and 1,700.
In a recent interaction held with BJP Booth workers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about how Shatabdi being the fastest train in India was introduced in 1988 and since then, in last 30 years, there has been no upgradation and innovation in Railways. He promised that by 2020, the semi-high speed train, Train 18, will successfully run across different routes.
