The married Hindu women are fasting today for the long and prosperous life of their husbands. Today is the one-day festival called Karwa Chauth which is celebrated on the fourth day of the waning moon after the full moon (Purnima) in the month of Kartika. Women dress up like a bride and do Shringaar while fasting the whole day. Their Shringaar include Red Saree, Bindi, Bangles, Sindoor, Heena etc.

Women wake up before sunrise, prepare food and eat it since they have to fast for the long day. In the afternoon, they dress up like a bride by wearing vibrant colors like Red, Pink, Maroon, Orange, Green etc. The ladies then gather at a common place like a temple or a garden or someone’s residence to do the pooja together. Each lady prepares a pooja thali in which a Diya and Agarbatti are lightened and rice and sindoor are also kept in the thali. The Pujaran or an elderly lady narrates the Karwa Chauth vrat Katha as others listen to it with devotion. During the pooja, women also keep a mud pot which symbolizes Lors Ganesha.

In the evening, women eagerly wait for the moon to rise so that they can end their fast by praying for the long and healthy life of their husbands. Women look at the moon’s reflection through her dupatta or a Thaali of water or sieve. The husbands then offer their wives some water and thus ends their long day fast.
