India is a land of festivals and celebrations and autumn brings the most favorite festivals of Hindus. 19 October of this year would mark the celebrations of Dussehra which is a festival of victory of good over evil. This day is celebrated every year in name of Vijay Dashmi to mark Lord Rama’s triumph over evil King Ravana.
The festival is celebrated with great zeal in every part of the country. People create an effigy of Ravana, Meghnath (son of Ravana) and Kumbhkarana (brother of Ravana). They are stuffed with firecrackers and are erected in an open ground. Every village and city has at least one effigy that they burn on this day which symbolizes the burning of evil so that the good only prevails.
According to the Hindu Calender, Dussehra falls on the tenth day (Dashmi) of Ashwin month. This day also marks the victory of Maa Durga over Mahishasur. Indians all over the world celebrate and send wishes on Dussehra to their friends and family on this day.
Days before Dussehra, people conduct Ramleela in which they re-enact the life of Lord Rama based on the holy book Ramayana. It ends on Dussehra with the burning of Ravana’s effigy. The history says that Ravana had kidnapped Lord Rama’s wife Sita and had abducted her in his kingdom Lanka. Lord Rama and his brother Laksham took help of Vaanar Sena including Lord Hanuman to free Sita from Ravana. After a long battle, the Powerful King Ravana who was blessed with superpowers by Lord Shiva was finally killed by Lord Rama on this day which marks as Vijay Dashmi and they all then returned to Ayodhya after completing 14 years of Vanvaas. Their return is celebrated every year by lighting Diyas on Diwali.
On this day, people wish each other with ‘Good over evil’ texts and wish them happiness, health and prosperity. We have jotted down some good messages to send to your friends and family. You can also post them as your Facebook or WhatsApp status.
