Arnab Goswami to apologize for his remarks on Live TV

Broadcasting Standards Authority ordered Republic TV to run a full screen apology on 7th September

During a debate that aired on Republic TV in January 2018, the Editor-in-Chief of Republic TV Arnab Goswami made some derogatory comments on few persons. Apparently, Arnab Goswami got angry about a rally (‘Yuva Hunkar Rally’) of Gujarat’s MLA Jignesh Mevani, where some people allegedly harassed Republic TV’s female reporter. The channel also uploaded a video of the incident on their official Youtube channel which was later taken down. The journalist was reporting live from the rally calling it a flop show referring to the absence of people in the rally. She was reported to be harassed by people present at the rally and had to be escorted to safety by the Police.

Arnab later that day, during his prime-time show came out and said:

“I want their faces circled more, I want the family members of these cheap, perverse goons to watch [them] doing this…at this event which was the ‘Jignesh flop show’. Let’s name and shame these people.”

Broadcasting Standards Authority, set up by News Broadcasters Association on a complaint filed by a person named A Singh, issued an order on 30th of August asking the channel and Arnab Goswami to apologize for the derogatory comments made by Arnab as there was no proof in the video of any harassment or abuse. Also, the apology has to be aired right before 9:00 PM Prime Time show of Arnab and needs to be played full screen.

Arnab Goswami Apology order:

Jignesh Mevani tweeted a photo on his official handle mentioning about the order.

It would be interesting to see if the channel will adhere to the order or not. Will they apologize or find another way around this? Still few days are left, Republic TV might roll up its sleeves and try to fight back. Everyone will be waiting for 9th September now.
