2+2 Dialogue: Whats in Store for India

India will host US in New Delhi for 2+2 Dialogue between the two countries on 6th September

Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi for the 2+2 dialogue. India has already given its commitment to Russia on the procurement of  S-400 air defense missile system not adhering to American sanctions on Moscow. This is expected to be brought up during the 2+2 dialogue in Delhi. India is likely to ask for US consent on the same citing major regional tensions that India is facing.

Trump administration nominated India as Major Defence Partner (MPD) and reiterated several times that foundational agreements are very important and India must adhere to them if it wants its hands on cutting-edge defense technology. A high ranking official said:

India has almost concluded the S-400 missile deal with Russia, and we are going ahead with it. Our position on the issue will be conveyed to the US.

US Government has under Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) put sanctions on Russia for trying to manipulate 2017 elections. US has also said that 2+2 dialogue will provide the necessary platform to enhance its engagement with India on various fronts. US will also be developing a strategy on how to operationalize India’s status of Major Defence Partner.

Both the sides are also expected to discuss Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA). India’s Purchase of MH-60 Romeo and armed drones is also expected from US. HADR- Humanitarian and Disaster Relief, which is a joint exercise between India and US is also expected to be notified.
