Coronavirus Lockdown has become reason to bring the magic of iconic shows back on Doordarshan. The nostalgia of the 80s can now be relived with another iconic mythological TV show, BR Chopra’s Mahabharat. Doordarshan is reviving the old favorites from its Pandora’s box.
After Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan telecast on Doordarshan today, it is the turn of Mahabharat to be re-telecast on DD Bharati from today. The same was informed by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar.

The iconic TV serial was aired on the Doordarshan National during 1988-1990 and now it will be telecast on DD Bharati.
Yesterday with the announcement of the airing of ‘Ramayan,’ amid the countrywide 21-day lockdown, requests had started pouring in for a rerun of 80s’ DD shows like ‘Mahabharat’, ‘ByomkeshBakshi’, ‘Shaktiman,’ ‘Circus’ to name a few. In fact, they were trending on Twitter the entire week.
Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati had also confirmed that they were “working on it” and one can expect “more iconic content” in the coming days.

The eponymous epic ‘Mahabharat’ is composed of 94 episodes and will be telecast every day on DD Bharati. Two episodes will be telecasted every day starting from today at 12 noon and 7 pm.
Whereas Ramayan will be telecasted on Doordarshan every day in the morning at 9 am and another in evening at 9 pm.

BR Chopra’s Mahabharat featured Nitish Bhardwaj as Krishna and Roopa Ganguly as Draupadi, with Gajendra Chauhan, Praveen Kumar, Arjun, Sameer Chitre and Sanjeev Chitre as the Pandavas, and Punit Issar playing Duryodhana. The show ran for almost 94 weeks starting from 2 October 1988 and ended on 24 June 1990.
