Bollywood superstar Govinda, who ruled the box-office in the 90s recently appeared on Rajat Sharma’s show ‘Aap Ki Adalat’. On his visit, Govinda made several revelations about his days of struggle, the reason behind his success, and the bitter truth of award functions.
When Rajat said that he is a superstar by luck, Govinda replied that it was his parent’s blessings that made him successful. However, his statements about filmmaker David Dhawan have made headlines for being of insulting nature.
David made his directorial debut with the film Taaqatwar in the year 1989. The film starred Govinda as a lead actor. The duo worked in a total of 17 films out of which 15 were super hit at the Indian box office. Coolie No.1, Hero No.1, Dulhe Raja, Chote Miyan Bade Miyan are just a few to name.
The actor-director duo came together for the last time for 2007 film Partner. And since then, they are not on talking terms. On being accused that he has not talked to David for years, Govinda made shocking statements.
“I do not think his son will ever do 17 films with him, because he is, after all, David Dhawan’s son. He is educated. I never realized the meaning of doing 17 films with a director. It was Sanjay Dutt who told me to give work to a fellow Punjabi (David Dhawan). I used to give work to fellow Punjabis at that time. I liked David and did many hit films with him. I did not even treat my relatives as well as I treated him. Even with my brother, who is a director, I did not do 17 films.”
He revealed that he tried to get in touch with David after his exit from politics but was hurt to know David’s rude response. The actor said, “After I left politics, I told my secretary to keep the phone speaker on so that I could listen to what he (David Dhawan) was saying. I heard David saying, ‘Chi-Chi (Govinda’s nickname) is questioning a lot.’ He was telling my secretary,
I do not want to work with Govinda anymore. Tell him to do some small bit roles. This shocked me and I decided never to work with him. After 4-5 months, I again rang him up just to find out if he would give me a guest appearance in his film. He then never rang me back. I am revealing this in public after so many years. I think he is under somebody’s influence. I do not think he is that same David Dhawan who I used to know.”
Govinda’s episode on Aap Ki Adalat has gone popular for his several shocking revelations. The actor claimed that he was approached by James Cameron to star in the Hollywood film ‘Avatar’ which he apparently rejected.
The actor said, “I had informed James that the film will do really well. I told him that I feel it will take seven years for him to complete the film. He got angry. He asked, ‘How can you be so sure that I won’t be able to make Avatar for seven years?’ I told him that what he was imagining was something almost impossible. And as predicted by me, the film released 8 or 9 years later and was a super-hit.”
Stating the reason why he turned down the role, he said, “James wanted me to shoot for 410 days. For someone like me, to get painted all over the body was something I could not do. So, I apologized. But like I said, the film went on to become a super hit.”
